Beneath the Red Banner by Beijing People's Art Theatre
Beneath the Red Banner is a new adaptation of LAO She’s unfinished work by Beijing People’s Art Theatre, reinterpreted by LI Longyun and co-directed by FENG Yuanzheng and YAN Rui. This ensemble drama vividly brings to life the scenes of late Qing Dynasty Beijing through LAO She’s perspective. With over 40 actors from three generations on stage, it portrays both the Eight Banners aristocrats and the common people of the capital, reflecting the transformation and spirit of an era. The production employs an abstract stage design, with a red rooftop as the visual Centrepiece, incorporating elements of opera and dance. It breaks traditional forms of Beijing-style Theatre, connecting history and time through PU Cunxin's portrayal of LAO She’s “observations and feelings”, delivering a unique modern interpretation of the city’s cultural essence.
