Ouju Opera--Top Graduate Zhang Xie by Wenzhou Ouju Opera Institute

Ouju Opera--Top Graduate Zhang Xie originates from an early Southern Song Dynasty opera script, compiled by the literati of Wenzhou Jiushan Book Club. It is the earliest and most well-preserved traditional Chinese opera script discovered to date. Ouju Opera--Top Graduate Zhang Xie was produced in 2021, with the script written by ZHANG Lie and AN Sheng, directed by SUN Xiaoyan, and music composed by CAI Nanzheng. Plum Blossom Award winner FANG Rujiang leads the cast. This production revives the essence of the Southern Opera with a contemporary consciousness, returning to simplicity while retelling a heartfelt story. On one hand, it offers a fresh perspective on the old tale, preserving its entertainment and legendary appeal while imbuing it with modern ideological connotations. On the other hand, it utilizes traditional opera performance techniques, retaining the aesthetic beauty of classical Chinese opera.
