The large-scale historical Cantonese opera Double Embroidery Affinity
The large-scale newly composed Cantonese opera Double Embroidery Affinity is produced by the Guangzhou Municipal Publicity Department and the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism, and created and performed by the Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Troupe. The production was selected as the funding project of the 2024 National Arts Fund. Rooted in Lingnan local themes, the play subtly integrates Cantonese opera (a world intangible cultural heritage) and Cantonese embroidery (a national intangible cultural heritage). Through the structure of "two leading male roles and two leading female roles", it tells a love story set in the period of the Huaixi rebellion in the 10th year of Tang Dynasty’s Yuanhe reign, where two pairs of men and women become connected through "embroidery". The storyline places individual destinies against the sweeping tides of history, evoking a deep sense of nostalgia and inspiring the audience to cherish their roots and hold their homeland close to heart.
