Tangent is a stage masterpiece created by Japanese media artist Shiro Takatani leading avant-garde art collective Dumb Type, featuring music from renowned composer Ryuichi Sakamoto's final album, 12. This work brings together Takatani’s three-decade-long exploration across installation art, theatre, and contemporary dance, establishing a new form of contemporary stage performance. Tangent revolves around the theme of "liminal space," deeply exploring the boundary between the real and the surreal. The work uses an 18.4-channel surround sound system and a pendulum audio feedback device to create a rhythmic feedback loop with the performers' voices. Through meticulous lighting and sound design, the artist constructs a transitional perceptual space within the theatre, cleverly transforming critical natural phenomena—such as the shifting interplay of light and shadow at dawn and dusk—into a unique artistic language.
