Experimental Peking Opera The Fools

Adapted from the famous Russian playwright Anton Pavlovich Chekhov's one-act play The Fools, the experimental Peking Opera The Fools strives to infuse the director's new conception and ideas developed through close study of the original while preserving its overall style. The production is presented in the form of traditional Chinese theatre, with the leading male and female roles portrayed respectively as Hualian (painted-face role) and Qingyi (virtuous female role type) in Peking Opera. Incorporating elements of shadow puppetry and environmental percussion, it became an intercultural production that presented a Western play through the artistic language of Chinese theatre.

The production participated in the commissioned works presentation of the 16th Shanghai International Arts Festival – Rising Artists' Works Program in 2016 and was invited to perform at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017.
