Folding City was a sci-fi music theatre work adapted from Ma Haiping's 2016 electronic music album Folding Traces. Fast mechanical pulses and sparkling synthesized sounds constructed the grandeur of a future metropolis: fluid, evolving, complex, infinite, hopeful and dynamic. The magnificent atmosphere combined sci-fi and reality, recalling The Manifesto of Futurism written by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti a hundred years ago.
The expectations and anxieties of people in contemporary society about the future, together with the various details and textures of future cities, were presented in this work exploring postmodern social issues. Folding City featured both a strong sense of realism and local consciousness.
