TAO Dance Theater presents 15 and 18 from its Numerical Series, continuing choreographer Tao Ye’s sustained exploration of physical language. Originating from a collaboration with Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT), 15 explores the fusion of Eastern and Western bodily vocabularies through triangular formations and collective movement. Inspired by Chinese calligraphy and Jin Dynasty poet Tao Yuanming’s Form, Shadow and Spirit, 18 is built upon Tao Ye’s original Circular Movement System. Within a spatial structure resembling a nine-square grid, the dancers’ bodies become brushstrokes, creating an Eastern aesthetic realm where dance, calligraphy and philosophical reflection converge. Together, the works explore the boundless possibilities of contemporary physical expression and create a profound dialogue between global perspectives and the aesthetics of Chinese cultue.
