Adapted from Tang Xianzu’s The Peony Pavilion, the dance drama Dream in Peony Pavilion is co-directed by Li Xing and Huang Jiayuan, reimagining a classic Chinese love story through the language of contemporary dance. Centering on the idea of “supreme emotion” that carries Du Liniang and Liu Mengmei beyond life and death, the work interweaves dream and reality through a dual structure of “the dream scroll” and “the painted scroll.” Using suggestive emptiness aesthetics, imagery from Suzhou gardens, an extended stage, and drifting mist, this performance creates a theatrical space that is both immersive and imbued with an Eastern poetic atmosphere. While remaining faithful to the spirit of the original work, this production augments the classic with a distinctly contemporary artistic expression, renewing the timeless emotional resonance and stage vitality of classical literature.
