Beijing People’s Art Theatre presents a new main-stage production of Hamlet, co-directed by Feng Yuanzheng and Yang Jiayin, starring Zheng Yunlong, Lu Lu, Du Zijun, Zeng Yongti, and Zhao Zhengtian. The youthful ensemble offers a fresh interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic. Centered on the theme of “choice”, the production retains the poetic expression of Zhu Shenghao’s classic Chinese translation while breaking away from linear storytelling. Interwoven layers of time and space and a stream-of-consciousness stage language reveal the characters’ inner struggles as they confront fateful decisions. Combining an industrial-style set, contemporary costume design, fencing, dance, singing, and instrumental performance, the classic text is given new life through contemporary aesthetics, giving this tragedy new timely reflections and dramatic tension.
