The National Ballet of China was founded in December 1959 and is a national-level professional ballet company, bringing together a roster of first-rate artists trained at leading professional institutions. Built on a solid foundation of the Russian school, the company has absorbed influences from a wide range of traditions and styles. It has produced and staged a wealth of international classics, including Swan Lake, Don Quixote, Giselle, Carmen, and Onegin, while also creating a number of distinctive works with strong Chinese cultural characteristics, such as The Red Detachment of Women, The Blessing, The Yellow River, Raise the Red Lantern, and The Peony Pavilion. Through this repertoire, the company has successfully forged a path for Chinese ballet that harmoniously integrates classical and contemporary, national and global elements.
