Guangdong Cantonese Opera Institute

Guangdong Cantonese Opera Theatre – founded in 1958 through the merger of the original Guangdong Cantonese Opera Troupe, Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Troupe, and several other troupes (including Pearl River, Yongguangming, New World, Dongfanghong, Taishengsheng, Nanfang, Guannanhua, and Guanghua). It is a public welfare category II institution under the Guangdong Department of Culture and Tourism, located at 703 Dongfeng East Road, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou. The founding director was Cantonese opera master Ma Shizeng, with deputy director Luo Pichao and artistic director Bai Jurong; the current director and artistic director is Zeng Xiaomin.


The Theatre comprises twelve internal units, including the First and Second Troupes and the Guangdong Cantonese Opera Art Center. It is the largest and most accomplished Cantonese opera ensemble, serving as a premier global production base and the highest artistic殿堂 for the genre, with responsibilities spanning performance, creation, and research.
