WU Man

WU Man is a pipa virtuoso, a defining figure in contemporary Chinese music on the international stage, and a leading force in cross-genre and cross-cultural collaboration. She holds an honorary Doctor of Music from the New England Conservatory, an honorary fellowship from Hong Kong Baptist University, and has been a research scholar at Harvard University. As the first Chinese instrumentalist to achieve global influence, Wu Man has redefined the role of the pipa, transforming it into a bridge for Chinese culture—the media has called her "the musician who turned the pipa into a gateway to China." Actively engaged in international musical partnerships, she has collaborated extensively with major orchestras and composers, advancing the global reach of traditional Chinese music. In 2023, she received the National Heritage Fellowship—the highest honor for traditional arts in the U.S. from the National Endowment for the Arts—as well as the Asia Arts Game Changer Award from the Asia Society, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to artistic innovation and cultural dialogue.
