Impression of Beijing Opera Xuetao by Chengdu Peking Opera Company and Jingju Theatre Company of Chongqing

Impression of Beijing Opera Xuetao is a collaboration between the Chongqing and Chengdu Peking Opera Theatres, starring two Plum Blossom Award winners, LIU Lu and ZHOU Li, in a double lead role. The play tells the story of the famous female poet XUE Tao from Sichuan during the Tang Dynasty. The narrative is framed by the image of a peacock raised in XUE Tao’s household, with the peacock serving as a reflection of XUE Tao's inner world. Against the grand backdrop of the Tang Dynasty, the production intricately explores her emotional landscape. In terms of music, the play retains the beauty of traditional Peking Opera melodies but incorporates elements of Kunqu opera, folk songs, and even modern pop music. This fusion breaks the stereotypical perception of Peking Opera singing, allowing the audience to meet XUE Tao across time and space through the blend of ancient and contemporary sounds.
