Drama White Deer Plain by Shaanxi People's Art Theatre
The play White Deer Plain is adapted from CHEN Zhongshi’s Mao Dun Literature Prize–winning novel of the same name and is hailed as a new pinnacle of Chinese drama. The production is performed in the Shaanxi dialect and, through grand storytelling and exquisite acting, it condenses the 500,000-word literary classic into a powerful stage experience. Spanning half a century, the story portrays the complex relationships in rural China amid dramatic social changes—from family to individual, from kinship to faith. The interplay of democratic progress, feudal remnants, and traditional culture creates emotional tensions between intimacy and betrayal, weaving a narrative that is at once authentic and absurd, heartbreaking yet soul-stirring epic of life.
