Peking Opera Nouveau On Stage, Off Stage by Taipei Li-yuan Peking Opera Theatre
The play On Stage, Off Stage is written and directed by the acclaimed Wenwu Laosheng artist LI Baochun, recipient of the Magnolia Award and the Lincoln Center Award for Outstanding Artist in New York. The leading cast includes KONG Yueci and LI Longxian from Taipei New Theatre, musical theatre soprano LIN Ziyin, and stage actor LIU Shimin. LÜ Yuyong serves as the vocal arranger, while ZHONG Yaoguang integrates traditional opera vocal techniques with Western music theory, conducting a live orchestra that combines opera instruments, ethnic instruments, and Western instruments, innovating the expressive form of Peking Opera. Set in early 20th-century China, this poignant drama follows an opera troupe master and his adopted daughter as they defy adversity and fight for their artistic dignity. Through their journey, the play reveals how these performers courageously resist oppression—ultimately becoming the heroes of their own life story.
